Miami Considers $5 Million for Its Share of the Ludlam Trail, a 5.6-Mile Rail Corridor Turned Greenway

Monday, October 19, 2026 · City · GSM News

MIAMI — Miami is a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida. The long-delayed Ludlam Trail could get a $5 million push from the City of Miami. The City Commission has considered directing the city manager to budget and allocate $5 million this fiscal year for the design and construction of the trail segments inside city limits, using legally available city sources, potentially including reserves. The fiscal 2026-27 budget approved on September 24 had left the trail without city funding.

The Ludlam Trail is planned as a continuous 5.6-mile path for walking, running and bicycling along a former Florida East Coast Railway corridor between Northwest Seventh Street and Southwest 80th Street, connecting neighborhoods with parks, schools, transit, homes, workplaces and shopping areas. Efforts to preserve and transform the corridor were under way by the early 2000s; Miami-Dade County acquired it in 2018 and later completed environmental studies and preliminary plans.

At the county level, commissioners approved a professional services agreement with Kimley-Horn and Associates in July to design the full corridor, a contract valued at up to $9.53 million over five years. County plans call for an 18-foot-wide shared-use trail with landscaping, shade trees, lighting, seating, signs and connections to surrounding communities, with construction in phases as funding becomes available.

Supporters say the proposed city funding comes as the county begins designing the entire trail, giving Miami's portions a chance to advance alongside the broader project rather than remain stalled. (GSM, based on Miami Today reporting)
