San Diego Corrects New Trash-Fee Billing Errors, Refunds Early Payments as Budget Gap Narrows to About $120 Million

SAN DIEGO — San Diego is a city in San Diego County, California. The City of San Diego is correcting errors in its new trash-fee bills. Mayor Todd Gloria told ABC 10News the mistake was caught before paper bills were mailed, payments made early were refunded, and the city is working with the county to prepare corrected statements. Gloria called the problem unacceptable and apologized for it.
City officials said the bills are not due for several more weeks, giving the city and county time to issue accurate statements. The trash fee is part of San Diego's recent municipal finance changes, and billing accuracy has drawn questions from residents and City Council members, prompting the public explanation of the fix.
On the broader fiscal picture, Gloria said San Diego has cut its projected budget deficit to about $120 million this year, down from roughly $300 million last year. The city expects to release a five-year financial outlook in November laying out projected revenues, spending and gaps.
The mayor also said San Diego has continued clearing flood channels since the damaging 2024 floods and is focusing on communication and advance coordination as the region prepares for wet weather. (GSM, based on ABC 10News reporting)
