Portland Proposes Rules to Allow Robotaxis After Testing Period

The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has proposed a new regulatory framework that would allow self-driving vehicles to operate commercially in the city after a testing period — a key step toward future driverless robotaxis.
Under the framework, each company may test up to 75 vehicles, with a citywide cap of 225; companies must complete a 15-vehicle testing program before carrying paying passengers; and vehicles must log 50,000 miles — 25,000 in Portland and 25,000 elsewhere in the U.S. The proposal also covers safety, data reporting and accessibility requirements. The framework has not been adopted; PBOT expects to announce next steps on Oct. 27. (GSM, based on PBOT's proposal)
