Three Soloists, One Trio: Batiashvili, Capuçon and Thibaudet Perform Three Piano Trios in Cleveland Tonight

Cleveland — Violinist Lisa Batiashvili, cellist Gautier Capuçon and pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet take the stage together on October 19 at 7:30 p.m. at Mandel Concert Hall in Severance Music Center (11001 Euclid Ave, Cleveland, OH), as part of The Cleveland Orchestra's Recital Series. Touring North America as a trio this fall, the three soloists play a program of three piano trios spanning 1880 to 1923.
The program opens with Shostakovich's Piano Trio No. 1 (composed 1923, about 10 minutes), a one-movement work written at 16, originally titled Poème and dedicated to Tatyana Glivenko, a fellow student. Next comes Debussy's Piano Trio in G major (1880, about 20 minutes), written at 18 while Debussy was house pianist to the Russian patron Nadezhda von Meck in Florence, and lost for decades before its scores resurfaced. The evening closes with Dvořák's Piano Trio No. 3 (1883, about 40 minutes), regarded as a milestone of his career, its finale driven by the rhythms of Czech folk dance. Program annotator Michael Strasser notes that the first two works are youthful pieces through which their composers developed their craft, while Dvořák's trio is a mature work by a composer at the height of his powers.
Each of the three is a leading figure on their instrument. Georgian-born Batiashvili, who lives in Berlin, plays a 1739 Guarneri del Gesù violin and founded the Lisa Batiashvili Foundation in 2021 to support young Georgian musicians. French cellist Capuçon's foundation now counts 45 laureates. Thibaudet has recorded more than 70 albums and in 2025 was named a Chevalier of the Ordre de la Légion d'honneur, presented personally by President Emmanuel Macron. Severance Music Center, home of The Cleveland Orchestra, opened in 1931.
