Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · City · GSM News

Boston is a city in Suffolk County, Massachusetts. Students at multiple universities in the Boston, Massachusetts area walked out of classes on October 20 to join a nationwide "Freeze AI" walkout. According to organizer Irreplaceable, at least six Massachusetts schools had walkout sites, including Boston University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Northeastern University, the University of Massachusetts Boston, Simmons University and Wellesley College; Boston 25 News reported that students from Harvard University and Tufts University also took part. Some students rallied in front of the Massachusetts State House from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., where speakers described the impact of unregulated super intelligence on jobs, the economy, the environment and public safety, and called for an immediate freeze on SI development. "The people building AI say it could kill us all," the organizer wrote on its website. "Until people have a real say, a real stake, and real safety guardrails in place, this technology must not advance." The local action was co-organized by the Massachusetts AI Action Network.
