California Online Voter Registration Closed at Midnight Oct. 19; Secretary of State Says Same-Day Conditional Registration Remains Open

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · California · GSM News

California's Secretary of State reminded voters that online voter registration for the November 3 general election closed at midnight on Monday, October 19. Secretary of State Shirley Weber said eligible Californians could register or update their registration at registertovote.ca.gov, a mobile-friendly site that works on a laptop, tablet or smartphone, and that voters unsure of their status could check it online.

Those who missed the online deadline have not lost their chance to vote, the Secretary of State's office said. Eligible residents may use same-day, or conditional, voter registration in person at their county elections office or at any in-person voting location through Election Day. They will fill out a registration form and be given a ballot, which will be counted only after the county elections office completes its verification of their registration.

Every registered voter in California is mailed a ballot. Weber and Attorney General Rob Bonta have urged voters who plan to vote by mail to send ballots back by October 27, a week before Election Day, to make sure they arrive in time to be counted. The Attorney General's office said 148,241 mail ballots were rejected in the June primary, nearly two-thirds of them because of missed deadlines.
