FBI Adds Joseph Matos to Ten Most Wanted Fugitives List Over National Guardsman Killing: $1 Million Reward

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced in Chicago on October 20 that Joseph “Troubles” Matos, 44, has been added to the FBI's Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list, with the reward for his capture increased to $1 million. Matos is wanted in connection with the 2021 shooting death of Illinois National Guard member Chrys Carvajal in Chicago's Belmont Cragin neighborhood. The FBI said Matos has ties to Dallas, Texas, and to California.

“Today's addition of Matos to the FBI's notorious Ten Most Wanted Fugitives list ensures that his face and description will be found on every FBI-affiliated website and social media platform, and this case will now be on every phone around the world until he is apprehended,” said Ryan Whalen, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI's Chicago field office. He credited the Chicago Police Department, the prosecuting team under U.S. Attorney Andrew Butros, and Carvajal's family.

According to the FBI, on July 3, 2021, during an Independence Day weekend celebration of Carvajal's graduation from National Guard basic training, Matos and a fellow gang member allegedly shot and killed Carvajal as he walked to his car. The FBI said Matos is believed to be a member of the Milwaukee Kings street gang, whose members and associates have engaged in narcotics trafficking and acts of violence, including murder and assault, to acquire and preserve the gang's perceived territory on Chicago's North Side.

A joint investigation by the Chicago Police Department and the FBI led to an arrest warrant issued for Matos in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois in Chicago, after he was charged on May 14, 2024, with murder in aid of racketeering and murder through the use of a firearm. Several days later, FBI Chicago SWAT operators and local law enforcement conducted operations to locate Matos and his associate, Gary Roberson. Roberson was taken into custody; Matos was not located and has remained a fugitive. The charges against Matos remain allegations, and he has not been convicted.

The FBI describes Matos as 6 feet 2 inches tall, weighing approximately 220 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. His tattoos include “M-Town Kings” on the right side of his neck, “1300” on the left side, “MOST WANTED” on his belly, and “Heavensent, Hellbound” on his arms. The FBI said Matos should be considered armed and dangerous, is presumed to still be in the United States, and is believed to be hiding in the greater Chicago area. Anyone aiding him, the bureau said, is committing a serious federal offense.

Matos is the 544th fugitive added to the list. The FBI said 504 fugitives on the list have been apprehended or located since its inception, a rate of over 92 percent.
