Maine Governor Opens Four-Day Ireland Mission: Blue Bioeconomy, Trade and Investment on the Agenda

Maine Governor Janet Mills on October 19 kicked off a four-day mission to Ireland at Blue Ambition 2026, a global gathering of policymakers, industry leaders and researchers focused on innovation, investment and growth in the blue bioeconomy. Blue Ambition was held on the first day of the fifth Global Bioeconomy Summit, a four-day convening of world leaders on bio-based economic opportunities.
Over the coming days, the governor will discuss trade and investment opportunities with Irish businesses and hold bilateral meetings with Irish government leaders on trade, renewable energy and educational initiatives. She is also meeting Irish business leaders about opportunities in Maine, and is expected to return to Maine later this week.
The trip builds on a formal framework: in 2023, Governor Mills signed legislation creating the Maine-Ireland Trade Commission to formalize ties between Maine and Ireland. Maine's ocean economy — spanning fishing, aquaculture, boatbuilding and marine technology — is a traditional pillar of the state, and the governor has previously proclaimed the state's first Blue Economy Week to foster collaboration across its marine sectors.
