Governor Janet Mills of Maine met Irish Taoiseach Micheál Martin and other senior officials in Dublin on October 20 during a multi-day visit to Ireland, her office announced on October 21, carrying out the trip GSM reported on earlier this week.

Mills attended the 40th anniversary celebration of the Boston-based charity Irish American Partnership, conveyed Maine's regards to Martin, and spoke with former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern, a signatory of the 1998 Belfast Agreement. She traveled at the invitation of Mark Daly, president of the Irish Senate. Mills said one in six Maine residents has Irish heritage and called it an honor to discuss cooperation with Ireland's top leadership, from fisheries and higher education to rural health innovation; Ireland, the EU's only English-speaking country, offers Maine businesses and universities a route into European markets.

Earlier that day at Leinster House, Mills held a bilateral meeting with Conor McGuinness, chair of the fisheries and maritime affairs committee, on marine-economy cooperation. On October 19 she met James Lawless, minister for further and higher education, research, innovation and science, on higher education, medical research and innovation. Earlier in the week she addressed the Blue Ambition 2026 global blue bioeconomy summit. Maine created a Maine-Ireland Trade Commission in 2023 to promote bilateral trade. Mills returns to Maine later this week.
