G20 Summit Security Planning Spans Three South Florida Counties Ahead of Doral Summit

With less than two months to go before the G20 Leaders' Summit on December 14-15 at Trump National Doral in Doral, security planning is fully under way across the Miami area of Miami-Dade County, Florida. The summit has been designated a National Special Security Event, with the US Secret Service leading coordination.
At an October media briefing, officials described months of preparation involving the Secret Service, the FBI, FEMA, Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties, the City of Doral, and regional transportation and airport authorities. Mike Townsend of the Secret Service's Miami field office said South Florida's role as an international gateway made it a suitable host for world leaders, and Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle pointed to the region's experience managing major events.
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz said a summit of heavily protected heads of state presents “unique security challenges” compared with sporting events such as the FIFA World Cup. Officials expect road closures, detours and restricted-access zones around Doral during the summit and urged residents and visitors to plan ahead. A full attendee list has not been released; President Donald Trump has invited Russian President Vladimir Putin, according to the briefing account. (GSM, via The Miami Focal)
