Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · City · GSM News

At a ceremony in Miami, Miami-Dade County, Florida, on the evening of October 19, U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones of the Southern District of Florida presented a $1,039,000 federal grant to Miami-Dade County Public Schools at Miami Dade College's North Campus and joined in inducting new mentors and mentees into the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office, the funding was awarded through the Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs, Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and will support the school district's Youth Empowerment and Safety Initiative, strengthening youth mentoring, violence prevention and community partnerships, including Police & Youth Conferences, youth health and mental health summits, leadership workshops, conflict-resolution education and career exploration. The grant was awarded on September 30, 2026, with a project period extending through September 30, 2030.

Founded in 1993 by Congresswoman Frederica Wilson, the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project has for more than three decades connected young men with adult mentors, emphasizing personal responsibility, academic achievement, good citizenship and alternatives to crime and violence. Quiñones said public safety is about more than prosecuting crime — it is also about preventing crime and giving young people guidance and opportunities to make the right choices.
