Minnesota Hospital Association Releases 'A Statewide Crisis of Care' Report

Tuesday, October 20, 2026 · City · GSM News

Minneapolis is a city in Hennepin County, Minnesota. Minnesota's hospital system is the subject of a new report. The Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA) scheduled the release of a report titled "A Statewide Crisis of Care" for 1 p.m. on October 20, addressing record emergency demand, rising costs and the loss of services close to home.

According to figures previously released by the association, 31 hospitals across the state currently meet formal financial distress criteria, and some are unable to make payroll. The state's largest safety-net hospital faces potential closure, a Level I trauma center warns it is at a "breaking point," and 19 labor and delivery programs have shut down, forcing mothers to scramble for care. Patients in Greater Minnesota are driving 40, 50, even 70 miles for basic services.

National data from KFF show the number of uninsured Americans rose by more than 1.3 million in 2024, reaching 26.7 million, the first increase since 2019. In Minnesota, the uninsured rate increased by 1.5% between 2023 and 2024, the sixth-highest increase in the country. MHA president and CEO Rahul Koranne said every person who loses coverage will still need care but will arrive at hospitals sicker and without the ability to pay. The association is calling on state and federal policymakers to protect the 340B drug pricing program and establish a statewide hospital support pool.
