Columbus: State Rep. Ismail Mohamed Fined $1,200 for Campaign Finance Violations Ahead of Election

Columbus, Franklin County, Ohio: The Ohio Secretary of State's office has ruled that state Rep. Ismail Mohamed, a Democrat from Columbus' Northeast Side, failed to file multiple campaign finance reports on time and made errors in reported funds, fining him $1,200. The Columbus Dispatch disclosed the investigative report on October 20 through a public records request. It is Mohamed's second campaign finance violation.
The report, dated September 14, found that Mohamed's campaign committee did not file its 2025 annual report and 2026 pre-primary report on time, and that both reports were incomplete and inaccurate. Investigators sustained four of six allegations, including listing an existing loan as a new loan, which made balances on subsequent reports incorrect. "These balance discrepancy errors show the committee failed to disclose at least 90% of the total contributions received or of the total expenditures made during the respective reporting periods," the report stated.
Investigators also looked into allegations that Mohamed used campaign money for personal use but found no indication of that. Mohamed did not respond to a request for comment, the Secretary of State's office did not respond to a request for clarification, and it is unclear whether he has filed an appeal. The case is separate from a residency challenge brought by his Republican opponent, Bernadine Kennedy Kent, which the Franklin County Board of Elections voted 3-1 to deny on September 28. Mohamed remains on the ballot for the November 3 election.
