Character Actor Richard Riehle, Known as Tom Smykowski in 'Office Space,' Dies at 78 in Los Angeles
American character actor Richard Riehle has died at 78. His agency and management confirmed the news in a joint statement shared with USA Today on October 19, saying he died this past weekend; according to TMZ and Variety, he died on October 15 in Los Angeles, and friends told TMZ the cause was natural causes.
The statement said Riehle's career across theater, film and television spanned nearly five decades and more than 400 projects, and that beyond his talent he would be remembered for encouraging and supporting emerging actors and filmmakers. The statement asked that his family's privacy be respected.
Born May 12, 1948, in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Riehle earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame and an MFA from the University of Minnesota. After years in regional theater, he made his Broadway debut in 1986 in 'Execution of Justice,' having earlier appeared in an uncredited role in the 1975 John Wayne western 'Rooster Cogburn.' His turn as a quartermaster in the 1989 Civil War epic 'Glory' became a breakthrough he later called a highlight of his career.
He was best known to many viewers as product manager Tom Smykowski in the 1999 workplace satire 'Office Space,' a laid-off employee who wins a settlement after a hit-and-run and pursues his 'Jump to Conclusions' mat idea. From 2001 to 2005 he played Walt Finnerty across five seasons of the sitcom 'Grounded for Life'; its star Donal Logue paid tribute on October 19, calling him an amazing human being and a consummate professional.
Riehle's other screen credits included 'Of Mice and Men,' 'The Fugitive,' 'Casino,' 'Bridesmaids' and 'Free Willy.' He played several roles across the 'Star Trek' franchise and portrayed Santa Claus in eight different projects. In 2026 he appeared in the films 'The Cowboy Killer' and 'Boris Is Dead.'
