Gov. Hochul Announces Statewide Car Insurance Fraud Crackdown: 16 Arrested Over $500,000 in Bogus Claims

New York Governor Kathy Hochul, together with the State Police, announced on October 20 that 16 people had been arrested in a statewide crackdown on auto insurance fraud, involving $500,000 in fraudulent claims. At a news conference, Hochul said the number of insurance fraud cases in New York has tripled over the past five years and warned that "these first 16 are just the beginning." According to state police, the fraud rings used a typical playbook: deliberately staging crashes in the Bronx, on Long Island and upstate, forcing innocent drivers off course and then blaming them before filing large medical claims.

One staged crash in November 2025 generated claims of more than $150,000, and another case from October 2025 involved nearly $116,000. Investigators say that in December 2025, 28-year-old DuSean Barnett deliberately swerved into a car stopped at a stop sign at a Brooklyn intersection and then filed a $16,000 medical claim — but surveillance footage showed his car was the only one moving at the time.

Hochul said insurance fraud drives up premiums for drivers statewide and that cracking down on organized fraud is part of her plan to lower driving costs. The joint investigation by the State Police and the Department of Financial Services is continuing, with more arrests expected.
