Washington: Descendants of Chief Two Guns White Calf, the Logo's Inspiration, Call for Restoring the “Redskins” Name

Washington — The dispute over the Washington football team's former name has resurfaced in Washington, D.C. According to an October 20 Daily Caller report, descendants of Blackfeet Chief Two Guns White Calf, the inspiration for the team's logo, have publicly called for restoring the former “Redskins” name and logo, and hope to meet with President Trump to press the case. The logo was designed in 1971 by Walter “Blackie” Wetzel, based on the chief's likeness.

The family says the team never sought its opinion when the name was changed in 2020. Estate administrator Kenneth Conway said: “They tried to erase us, as if we had never existed.” Family member Brock Conway said: “They never asked our family for consent at all … and just like that, we were erased.” Estate representative Morningstar Gopher said the logo once brought the family honor and that they hope the chief will be remembered; she said: “We hope to meet with President Trump to make this happen.”

The “Redskins” name was retired in 2020 after being criticized as offensive to Native Americans; the team is now named the Commanders, and its new stadium is expected to open in 2030. (GSM, based on the Daily Caller)
