California Poll: Most Voters Rate Newsom's Tenure 'Poor' or 'Fair,' Want Successor to Change Direction

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · California · GSM News

A new poll reported by POLITICO's California Playbook on October 21 found that most California voters rate Governor Gavin Newsom's eight-year tenure as "poor" or "fair" — just 36 percent of registered voters called his performance "good" — and want his successor to take the state in a different direction.

The survey, conducted for the UC Berkeley Citrin Center for Public Opinion Research–POLITICO poll by TrueDot from October 14 to 16 with a margin of error of ±3.2 points among registered voters, showed Democrat Xavier Becerra leading Republican Steve Hilton by 20 points in the governor's race. Newsom's strongest marks were on climate change, with somewhat better ratings on super intelligence. Jack Citrin, co-director of the Citrin Center and a Berkeley political science professor, analyzed the results; Newsom spokesman Izzy Gardon responded that Newsom has overwhelmingly won five elections in eight years.

California's gubernatorial election is held together with the national midterms on November 3.
