Governor's Office: DOJ Charges 28 in Voter Fraud Case; Nearly 40 Percent of Sampled Names on 20,000-Name List Sent to LA County Were U.S.-Born

The California Governor's Office released a statement on October 20 detailing the U.S. Department of Justice's latest voter fraud allegations in California. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin had written that as many as 190,000 "illegal" voters might be on California's rolls, without providing evidence. The DOJ then sent a USB drive containing roughly 20,000 names to Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder Dean Logan, rather than to the Secretary of State, and gave no methodology for the list. On Monday, October 19, the DOJ announced charges against just 28 people. The Governor's Office said DOJ officials admitted on a call with California officials that U.S. citizens may mistakenly be on the list. According to a court filing by the LA County Registrar's office, 38.9 percent of a 200-name sample from the list were born in the United States. UCLA law professor Rick Hasen noted that 28 people equal 0.0001 percent of California's active voters. California has more than 23 million registered voters. The Governor's Office said it will keep pressing the DOJ on the list's methodology and accuracy.
