About 200 Dead Fish Found in Chino Hills Park Basin; Preliminary Tests Point to Low Dissolved Oxygen

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · California · GSM News

The City of Chino Hills, in San Bernardino County, California, issued a water quality update on October 21: on October 9, city staff discovered approximately 200 dead fish in the detention basin at English Springs Park, removed the fish and collected water samples.

As of October 21, preliminary results showed only one notable anomaly — a low dissolved oxygen level. The city said low dissolved oxygen does not directly cause fish mortality but can cause significant stress, and that oxygen levels may have dropped further before samples were collected. The city noted that the water feature is a detention basin designed to collect and manage stormwater runoff, not a recreational lake; the city does not stock the basin with fish, turtles or other aquatic life and does not manage it to maintain a fish population, and the aquatic life present is believed to have been introduced by visitors. The city asked the public not to release fish, turtles or other aquatic life into the basin.
