Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · States · GSM News

A Clark County, Nevada, jury convicted Canadian tourist Mitchell Fairbarn of Ontario on Oct. 19 of one felony count and one misdemeanor count of animal cruelty, with sentencing set for Dec. 1. On March 3, 2026, Fairbarn hopped a fence at the Flamingo Las Vegas, grabbed Peachy, a 27-year-old Chilean flamingo, by the neck and legs, and carried the bird through the hotel to his room, in an incident partly captured on surveillance video. Peachy suffered wing injuries and lost several feathers, and other flamingos were also injured. Peachy was recovered and treated by veterinarians, and Caesars Entertainment, the resort's parent company, confirmed its animal care team and veterinarians were caring for Peachy and the other injured birds.

Fairbarn, 34, has been under electronic house arrest in the Las Vegas area since shortly after the incident and surrendered his passport. His defense argued he had consumed 30 to 40 drinks and had no malicious intent, but jurors deliberated about five hours and rejected the argument. He faces up to four years in prison on the felony count plus up to six months on the misdemeanor. Judge Jacqueline Bluth will preside over the Dec. 1 sentencing.
