In Los Angeles County, California, a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Office custody commander told the Sheriff's Civilian Oversight Commission at its meeting this month that there have been 31 deaths in custody in the county jail system so far in 2026. By facility, 10 deaths occurred at Men's Central Jail, eight at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility, three each at the North County Correctional Facility and Pitchess Detention Center South, and two at the Century Regional Detention Facility. By manner of death, 11 were natural deaths, seven suicides, five homicides, three accidents and two undetermined, with several others drug-related. Commissioners questioned the Sheriff's Office about jail medical care and supervision. The Los Angeles County jail system is one of the largest county jail systems in the United States, and custody-death figures are reported regularly to the oversight commission.
