Pitt's BioForge Building Earns LEED Platinum: 437 kW Rooftop Solar, 35 Percent Less Water

In Pittsburgh, a city in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, the University of Pittsburgh's BioForge building has earned LEED Platinum certification for core and shell from the U.S. Green Building Council, the highest level in the rating system, Pittwire reported October 20.
The 185,000-square-foot biomanufacturing facility stands at Hazelwood Green, the 178-acre former site of Pittsburgh's last operating steel mill, itself a LEED Platinum neighborhood development. ElevateBio is the anchor tenant.
Chancellor Joan Gabel said the certification reflects the university's sustainability commitments. The building's 437-kilowatt rooftop solar array generates about as much electricity as 52 homes use in a year; more than 6,000 square feet of native plantings support the landscape, and once fully occupied the building will use 35 percent less water than comparable facilities.
