Yosemite's Tioga Road Closes Temporarily from 5 p.m. on October 21; No Reopening Date Announced

Wednesday, October 21, 2026 · Culture & Travel · GSM News

The National Park Service (NPS) has announced that Tioga Road in Yosemite National Park closed temporarily from 5 p.m. on October 21, with no fixed reopening date announced. The closed route is the high-country road through the northern part of the park, part of Highway 120.

Tioga Road runs toward Tuolumne Meadows, Tenaya Lake and Tioga Pass and provides the vehicle route across Yosemite to the eastern Sierra Nevada. Once the closure begins, drivers cannot use the road to cross the park from the eastern side. Yosemite Valley remains accessible from the west and south: approach roads include El Portal Road from the west, Wawona Road from the south, and the Big Oak Flat route on Highway 120 from the west. Trips that depend on high-elevation trailheads and viewpoints along Tioga Road need to be reconsidered separately from a visit to the Valley floor.

The park service is treating the October 21 closure as an operational safety change close to the usual winter transition for the high country: snow and ice can make the route unsafe before a regular seasonal closure is formally established. Visitors planning to travel between the park and communities on the eastern side of the Sierra in the coming days should check the park's latest conditions notice before setting out.
