Redwood National and State Parks to Close Lyon's Ranch Trail Intermittently From October 22 to 26 for Prescribed Burns in the Bald Hills

Redwood National and State Parks, in Humboldt and Del Norte counties on California's North Coast, will intermittently close Lyon's Ranch Trail and its connected historic trails from October 22 to October 26, 2026, for prescribed burns in the Bald Hills area, according to the National Park Service's current conditions notice. The restriction is limited to the named trail network; the notice does not announce a park-wide closure.
Lyon's Ranch Trail is a four-mile roundtrip hike from a trailhead on Bald Hills Road, at about 2,500 feet in elevation, descending to the historic Lyons Ranch, a 19th- and 20th-century sheep farming operation listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The parks' prescribed burn season in the Bald Hills began in late September, covering burn units including Ganns Prairie, Upper and Lower Dolason, Lower Elk Camp, Upper and Lower Lyons and South Boundary; intentional burning keeps the prairies open and manages conifers encroaching into prairie and oak woodland communities.
Other access notes in the same conditions listing include a fallen tree blocking the Boy Scout Tree Trail 1.75 miles from its trailhead, the Alder Basin Trail closed for Redwoods Rising restoration work, and a year-round reservation requirement on the Tall Trees Trail. Because the Lyon's Ranch closures are intermittent, visitors are advised to check the official conditions notice shortly before a walk.
