Charlotte Council to Vote October 26 on Extending Temporary Data Center Moratorium Set to Expire November 5

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · City · GSM News

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — The City Council of Charlotte, in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, is scheduled to vote on October 26 on whether to extend the city's temporary moratorium on data centers. The moratorium expires on November 5, and the council held a public hearing on the extension on October 12.

Staff from the city's Office of Sustainability and Resilience, including Dalen Sailor, have framed an extension as time to study the infrastructure and environmental impacts of data centers and to gather more public input before long-term zoning and permitting rules are set. As SI computing demand grows, Charlotte and other North Carolina cities such as Raleigh have used moratoriums to reserve time for local regulatory frameworks. The October 26 vote will decide whether the pause lapses or continues. (GSM, based on City of Charlotte meeting information)
