Columbus Releases First-of-Its-Kind Public Land Inventory: About 66 Square Miles of Parcels Mapped for Housing Review

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The City of Columbus, in Franklin County, Ohio, released a first-of-its-kind public land inventory on October 16, mapping publicly owned and tax-exempt parcels totaling about 66 square miles across the city and Franklin County. It is the city's first systematic accounting of land held by public entities or exempt from taxation, intended to help evaluate which underused parcels could serve housing and other community needs.
The reported affordable-housing deficit in the Columbus area is about 53,000 units. By consolidating parcel information previously scattered among different agencies into a single map, officials say the inventory gives the city, the county and development partners a factual basis for discussing land reuse. The inventory itself approves no projects; any future use of a specific parcel would still go through existing planning and approval processes. (GSM, based on The City Dispatch reporting)
