Ten Minneapolis Council Members Coauthor Resolution Opposing School District Transformation Plan Options That Could Close 15 to 16 Schools

MINNEAPOLIS, Minnesota — The Minneapolis City Council, in Hennepin County, Minnesota, announced on October 8 a resolution coauthored by ten council members opposing options in Minneapolis Public Schools' Transformation Plan that could close schools. Under the district's published options, as many as 15 to 16 schools could close as early as the 2027–28 school year.
The coauthors used the resolution to state the council's position that closures on that scale would affect students and families across many neighborhoods. District officials have framed the Transformation Plan as a response to enrollment and financial pressures, and the options remain under discussion with no final decision made. The council's resolution is not legally binding on the district; the school board remains the decision-maker on any closures.
