St. Louis Refuse Pilot Trims Alley Dumpsters in Wards 3 and 5: Routes Expected to Run Three Hours Faster

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · City · GSM News

ST. LOUIS, Missouri — The Refuse Division of the City of St. Louis, Missouri, launched a pilot program on October 16 reducing the number of trash dumpsters in alleys in Wards 3 and 5, aligning them with the city's standard of one dumpster for every four households. The division said dumpster counts in some areas exceed that allotment, which often results in increased illegal dumping and decreased service efficiency.

'Our goal with this pilot is to further improve the efficiency and timeliness of our trash collection services,' said Street Department Director James Jackson. 'We know that open dumpsters can attract illegal dumping, impacting the quality of life for our citizens.' The division expects routes in the pilot areas to take about three hours less, with the saved time reinvested in collection services citywide and reduced wear on trash trucks. Since the city ended alley recycling in August 2025, alley trash pickup has run twice a week, and the city has increased recycling drop-off locations for residents.
