Tampa CRA Awards First Commercial Design Grant: Vacant 1920s Storefront in West Tampa Gets Fully Funded Design Services

Thursday, October 22, 2026 · City · GSM News

TAMPA, Florida — The Tampa Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA), in Hillsborough County, Florida, awarded its first Commercial Design Grant on October 14, helping West Tampa property owner Marvin Knight reimagine his vacant 1920s retail store at 2113 West Main Street. The grant provides 100 percent funding for professional design, planning, consulting and engineering services, delivered by Austin Construction Group, to produce permit-ready construction plans that transform the property into a tenant-ready space for new businesses; the owner is pairing the award with additional CRA exterior and interior grants to build the improvements.

The Commercial Design Grant was created by the Tampa CRA to help property owners overcome upfront development barriers for small- to medium-scale commercial projects. It is a non-matching grant with a maximum of $150,000 in services value, delivered by pre-qualified CRA-contracted firms and covering concept design, site layout, renderings, construction documents and feasibility planning. Eligible commercial properties must be located in one of the city's eight designated redevelopment areas: Central Park, Channel District, Downtown, Drew Park, East Tampa, Tampa Heights Riverfront, West Tampa and Ybor City.
