Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning answered questions on the Arctic at the regular press briefing on October 22, Xinhua reported from Beijing. A reporter had asked about the European Union's new Arctic strategy and related warnings by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas.

Mao said the Arctic concerns the overall interests of the international community, and that the rights and freedoms of all countries to conduct activities in the Arctic in accordance with the law should be fully respected.

Mao said China's activities in the Arctic are aimed at promoting peace, stability and sustainable development in the region and are in line with international law.

Mao said that dividing the region into camps with a Cold War mentality and stirring up geopolitical confrontation is not conducive to peace, stability and development in the Arctic.
