Orange County Sheriff to Run Traffic Safety Operation in Laguna Woods on October 23

Laguna Woods, a city in Orange County, California, will see a focused traffic safety operation this week. The Orange County Sheriff's Department announced on October 21 that it will conduct the operation in Laguna Woods on October 23, targeting the driver behaviors that put people biking or walking at the greatest risk.
The department said the violations in focus include speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield or provide the right of way to bicyclists or pedestrians, and failing to stop for signs and signals. "We all have places to be and not everyone gets there by car," Sergeant K. Ishii said. "Bicyclists and pedestrians have the same rights to the road but face even more risk without the protections vehicles have. We should all be looking out for one another."
Funding for the program is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the department said. Laguna Woods is one of the contract cities served by the Orange County Sheriff's Department.
In its announcement, the department listed safety steps for pedestrians, drivers and bicyclists: pedestrians should use crosswalks and watch for approaching vehicles and wear light colors or reflective material at night; drivers should slow down at intersections, be prepared to stop at crosswalks and never drive impaired; bicyclists should obey traffic laws, use hand signals and lights at night, and wear a helmet.
