International Criminal Court Wins EU's 2026 Sakharov Prize, Less Than Two Weeks After Trump Announced Sanctions

The European Parliament announced on Thursday, October 22, that the International Criminal Court (ICC) has won the European Union's top human rights award, the 2026 Sakharov Prize — the court's second international honour this month.
The timing drew attention: the announcement came less than two weeks after President Donald Trump announced sanctions on the ICC. Just hours before that sanctions announcement, former ICC judge Navi Pillay had won the Nobel Peace Prize.
The Hague-based court has been a target of the Trump administration over its arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and others. The Sakharov Prize, named for Soviet physicist and dissident Andrei Sakharov, is the EU's highest human rights honour and is awarded by the European Parliament. (GSM, via Reuters)
