Monterey Park Police Mark National Pedestrian Safety Month, Plan Traffic Safety Operation on Oct. 30

The Monterey Park Police Department, in Los Angeles County, California, has issued a notice for National Pedestrian Safety Month in October, calling on drivers to slow down and yield to people walking. Citing National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) figures, the department says an average of 19 pedestrians are killed in traffic crashes in the United States every day; in 2024, about 7,080 pedestrians were killed nationwide, including 1,090 in California. The department reminds drivers to slow down, avoid distractions and yield at crosswalks.
The department says it will conduct a traffic safety operation on Oct. 30 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., targeting driver behaviors that put pedestrians at risk, including speeding, illegal turns, failure to yield, and running stop signs and traffic signals. Funding for the operation is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through NHTSA.
