AlertRivCo, the official alert system operated by the Riverside County Emergency Management Department in California, issued a public safety alert at 6 a.m. on October 22 saying 9-1-1 may be down in Riverside County. The Riverside County Sheriff's Office posted a "9-1-1 Outage Alert" on its official accounts the same morning, confirming the outage is affecting some cellular users in the county.

"We are aware of an outage affecting some cellular users' ability to call 9-1-1," the Sheriff's Office said in the alert. "If you have an emergency and cannot get through to 9-1-1, please call 951-776-1078."

The AlertRivCo message also states that the alternate number, 951-776-1078, is for real emergencies only, that callers should stay on the line until connected, and that updates will be provided as systems are restored, with official sources to be monitored for information.

Police departments in the Coachella Valley have also published alternate numbers for their own cities: Palm Springs Police Department, 760-327-1441 (residents there can also text 911); Indio Police Department, 760-775-3730; Cathedral City Police Department, 760-770-0300; and Desert Hot Springs Police Department, 760-329-2904. The Desert Hot Springs department says its own 911 system is working normally.

As of about 10 a.m. on October 22, neither the Sheriff's Office nor the county Emergency Management Department had issued an update announcing that service was restored, and no cause for the outage had been released. GSM will continue to follow developments.
