Follow-Up: Riverside County 9-1-1 Service Fully Restored After Daylong Outage

The 9-1-1 outage that disrupted emergency calling across Riverside County, California, for most of October 22 has ended. At 5 p.m., the county alert system AlertRivCo pushed a public safety alert to residents announcing that 9-1-1 service in Riverside County is fully restored. Minutes earlier, at about 4:53 p.m., the Riverside County Sheriff's Office posted on its official account: "Update: The network outage has been restored. Thank you!" — stamping the words "NETWORK OUTAGE RESTORED" across its original outage notice.
The failure surfaced in the early hours of October 22. The Palm Springs Police Department first flagged the problem at about 2 a.m., saying T-Mobile customers might be unable to reach 911. The city of Indio's 911 lines went down at about 3:30 a.m. Around 6 a.m., Riverside County sent a countywide AlertRivCo alert warning that some cellphone users might not get through to 9-1-1, and published the Sheriff's dispatch line, 951-776-1078, as the emergency alternate number. The alert area covered the entire county, from the Temecula area in the southwest to Blythe in the east. The disruption mainly affected some AT&T and T-Mobile cellular users; texting 911 remained available throughout, and some cities, including Desert Hot Springs, reported their 911 systems were working normally.
Officials did not update the cause of the outage in the restoration notice. AT&T had earlier said the failed calls stemmed from damage to another provider's fiber lines, and Cathedral City police had mentioned suspected vandalism in the Los Angeles area as a possible factor, which was not confirmed; officials said the cause remained under investigation. With service restored, residents can once again reach emergency dispatchers by dialing 911 as usual, and the alternate number is no longer needed for emergencies.
