Nearly 50 Taiwanese Community Leaders in Los Angeles Issue Joint Statement Backing Taiwan's U.N. Participation

Nearly 50 Taiwanese community leaders in Los Angeles have issued a joint statement calling on the international community to give greater support to Taiwan's participation in the United Nations, ICRT reported on October 23.
The statement came as the 81st session of the U.N. General Assembly opened in New York. It argues that Resolution 2758 — which in 1971 transferred China's U.N. seat to Beijing — did not determine Taiwan's representation or sovereignty, and that the international participation of Taiwan's 23 million people should not be constrained by that resolution.
Presidential Office national policy adviser Lin Jung-sung also publicly called on Taiwan's political parties to build a cross-party consensus on U.N. participation and speak with one voice internationally. Meanwhile, Taiwan's Foreign Ministry has launched its annual U.N. campaign, and a delegation of legislators from Taiwan's three major parties traveled to New York this week to promote Taiwan's international participation.
The community leaders said Taiwan's contributions in public health, technology and trade are evident to all, and that excluding Taiwan from the U.N. system is neither fair nor in the interest of the international community. Los Angeles is home to one of the largest Taiwanese communities in the United States, whose members have long followed the issue of Taiwan's international space; the joint statement, signed by nearly 50 leaders, is one of the larger collective actions by Southern California's Taiwanese community on U.N. participation in recent years.
