DOT Announces Engineering Milestone for Florida's Broward Commuter Rail South: FTA Commits About $164 Million

Friday, October 23, 2026 · Federal · GSM News

Washington — The U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced on October 23 that Florida's Broward Commuter Rail South project has entered the Engineering phase of FTA's Capital Investment Grants (CIG) program, with FTA committing approximately $164 million to the project. Once complete, the project will extend commuter rail service from Aventura in Miami-Dade County to Fort Lauderdale, delivering a north-south transit alternative for southeastern Broward County; FTA said the line will offer a direct ride from Fort Lauderdale to downtown Miami.

Now in the Engineering phase, Broward County Transit can begin investing in engineering activities, demolition and utility relocation, property acquisition, and other non-construction costs, including procurement of specialized equipment and materials. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy said the milestone means Florida is one step closer to building a new commuter line that will deliver another affordable, safe, and efficient way for Florida families to get where they need to go. FTA Acting Deputy Administrator Matthew Cahill said the project will improve transportation options for families and commuters between Miami and Fort Lauderdale, connecting South Floridians to healthcare, education, and employment centers.

According to FTA, the funding would support 10.5 miles of commuter rail service along the existing Florida East Coast (FEC) Railway, connecting northeast Miami-Dade County, Hallandale Beach, Hollywood, the Dania Beach/Airport District, and neighborhoods south of Downtown Fort Lauderdale. The proposed project includes three stations and new rail vehicles. FTA said its anticipated CIG funding commitment will be $164 million once all financial, technical, and legal requirements are completed, subject to the annual appropriation of funds by Congress. The CIG program is a multi-step, multi-year funding opportunity that helps communities carry out major transit projects nationwide.
