Hemet Council Approves Up to $759,000 to Restore Nine Frozen Police Department Positions

HEMET, California — The Hemet City Council on October 13 adopted Resolution 2026-168, appropriating up to $759,000 from the Police Measure U fund balance to restore nine frozen police department positions this fiscal year in the City of Hemet, Riverside County, California.
The restored positions are six full-time police officers, one full-time community service officer, one outreach and engagement specialist and one part-time temporary civilian investigator. The city estimates the full-year cost of the fully staffed positions at about $1.301 million, with funding for later years to be set in the fiscal 2027–28 budget.
Measure U is a voter-approved public safety tax in Hemet; its citizens oversight committee unanimously recommended the appropriation on September 22. City reports put the fund's preliminary balance on July 1 at about $13 million. Restoring frozen positions has been a central topic in Hemet's police staffing debate.
