Los Angeles Mayor Brings Two Motions to Metro Board: Stronger Rider Safety and Renaming Pershing Square Station

Friday, October 23, 2026 · City · GSM News

LOS ANGELES, California — Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass brought two motions to the LA Metro board on October 22: one to strengthen rider safety across the Metro system, and one to rename downtown's Pershing Square Station as Biddy Mason Station.

The safety motion directs Metro's public safety department to improve its response to people in crisis and to deploy officers and Metro Ambassadors strategically, concentrating visible security where ridership and calls for help are highest. Bass said the value of Metro's expansion investment depends on riders feeling safe.

The renaming motion honors Biddy Mason, who won her own freedom and became one of Los Angeles's earliest Black women landowners. Last month the city council passed a motion to rename Pershing Square itself as Biddy Mason Square. The Metro board will take up both motions for a vote.
