Follow-up: LA Metro Board Votes Unanimously to Rename Pershing Square Station for Biddy Mason

Friday, October 23, 2026 · City · GSM News

LOS ANGELES, California — The LA Metro Board of Directors, in Los Angeles County, California, voted unanimously on Thursday, October 22 to rename the downtown Pershing Square station (B and D Lines) the Biddy Mason Station. The motion was introduced by Board Chair and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and co-authored by Director Jacquelyn Dupont-Walker, County Supervisors Holly Mitchell and Hilda Solis, and Inglewood Mayor James Butts. Metro will update station signs, maps and geographic data in a timely and cost-effective manner, notify the city, nearby businesses and community organizations before the new name takes effect, and promote the change on its website and social media. At the same meeting, Bass also moved to strengthen rider safety, asking Metro public safety staff to provide more appropriate resource referrals for people in mental and behavioral health crises and to deploy safety personnel and Metro Ambassadors strategically. Mason was born enslaved and, after being forced to California by her enslaver, successfully petitioned a Los Angeles court for her freedom; she became a nurse and midwife, one of the first Black women to own land in Los Angeles — holding several downtown parcels — helped found the city's first African Methodist Episcopal church, and was known for her charity. Last month, Bass signed a City Council motion renaming Pershing Square park as Biddy Mason Square; the station renaming follows it.
