Philadelphia Announces $21.7 Million Second Phase of McPherson Square Library Renovation

Friday, October 23, 2026 · City · GSM News

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania — Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker, marking her 1,000th day in office, announced a $21.7 million second phase of renovation for the McPherson Square Library in the Kensington neighborhood.

Funding comes from several sources: $1 million from the state's Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program, $800,000 from the state Local Share Account, two federal Economic Development Initiative community project grants totaling $1.85 million, and contributions from the Mattleman Family Foundation and the William Penn Foundation.

The McPherson Square Library serves Kensington as both a branch library and a community gathering space. The city says the second phase will renew building systems and reading spaces; the Free Library of Philadelphia will announce phased opening arrangements during construction.
