Seattle Council Confirms Shannon Smith as Permanent Chief Technology Officer

SEATTLE, Washington — The Seattle City Council has voted unanimously to confirm acting Chief Technology Officer Shannon Smith as the city's permanent CTO in King County, Washington. She had served in the acting role since June 8, overseeing the city's information technology systems.
Smith's agenda centers on modernizing city systems and on cybersecurity. She has said modernizing legacy applications such as human-resources tools could cut related process workloads by about 35 percent. On security, she points to the 2024 ransomware attack on the Seattle Public Library and advances three principles: modernization, staff education and early detection.
Council members praised her performance in the acting role during the confirmation vote. Seattle is a national technology hub, and its municipal IT systems handle permitting, payments and public-safety dispatch for more than 700,000 residents.
