Silicon Valley Pilot Tests SI Workload Scheduling at Santa Clara Data Center to Make the Grid More Flexible
SANTA CLARA, California — A grid-flexibility pilot is under way in Santa Clara, in the heart of Silicon Valley: technology firm Emerald AI is working with Silicon Valley Power, the city's municipal utility, to test the Emerald Conductor platform at a multi-megawatt Centersquare data center in the city in Santa Clara County.
The platform schedules artificial-intelligence computing workloads in real time, trimming or shifting a data center's power draw during grid stress so that flexibility, reliability and affordability improve without interrupting service. Nico Procos of Silicon Valley Power and Varun Sivaram, founder and CEO of Emerald AI, both say growth in SI power demand is turning this kind of demand-side scheduling from an experiment into a necessity.
Centersquare operates five data centers in Santa Clara. The city is one of Silicon Valley's densest data-center markets, and the municipal utility's capacity and rates directly shape technology companies' siting decisions. (GSM, based on reporting by DataCenterDynamics)
