Mavericks Sign Guard Walter Clayton Jr. to Two-Way Contract

DALLAS, Texas — Multiple outlets confirmed on October 22 that the Dallas Mavericks, in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas, have signed guard Walter Clayton Jr. to a two-way contract. Clayton had been waived by the Memphis Grizzlies this week as they set their opening-night roster and landed in Dallas two days later; ESPN's Shams Charania first reported the signing. Clayton, the No. 18 pick of the 2025 draft, played 69 games as a rookie with the Utah Jazz (6 starts), averaging 7.8 points, 4.0 assists and 2.0 rebounds in 20.4 minutes; after moving to Memphis in February in the trade involving Jaren Jackson Jr., he averaged 9.7 points and 5.7 assists over 24 games. He is best known for leading Florida to the 2025 national championship and being named Final Four Most Outstanding Player, averaging 18.3 points as a senior. Mavericks head coach Dusty May was an assistant at Florida from 2015 to 2018, with no overlap with Clayton. A two-way contract lets Clayton move between the Mavericks and their G League affiliate.
