Chamblee's Former State Revenue Building to Be Imploded at 7:45 A.M. on October 24; Triangular Tower a Metro Atlanta Rarity

CHAMBLEE, Georgia — An 18-story office building at 1800 Century Blvd in Chamblee, DeKalb County, Georgia, will be imploded at 7:45 a.m. on Saturday, October 24. Built in 1981, the building housed the Georgia Department of Revenue and has been vacant since 2024; Dave Savignano of Atlas Demolition said its interior has been emptied over the past months and its windows removed to prepare for the blast. The building was once planned for conversion to housing, a plan abandoned because conversion costs were too high, and commercial use was also deemed no longer viable. Savignano said the triangular building will be the first triangular high-rise ever imploded, and that high-rise implosions account for less than 1% of all demolition work; after the blast, the building is expected to come down within two to three seconds. Chamblee and Brookhaven police and FBI personnel will close surrounding roads and set up a safety perimeter, and residents and onlookers are reminded to stay away from the site.
