Clark County Adds Over $715K a Year for Crossing Guards; 64 Students Already Hit by Cars This School Year

LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Clark County, home to Las Vegas, Nevada, has approved more than $715,000 a year in additional funding to expand crossing guard coverage around Las Vegas Valley schools. The contracts carry a combined cap of nearly $64 million, run through June 2028, and include up to seven one-year renewal options. According to Clark County School District data, 64 students have already been struck by cars on their way to or from school this school year. Krista Holloway, founder of the local traffic-safety nonprofit Walk Safely LV, said many parents come to her with concerns about safety at school crossings, and she hopes the new funding will be used to hire and retain guards and staff more crossings. Holloway said guards earn about $17 an hour with limited hours, making recruitment and retention difficult; the crossing she works has only one guard a day, and a former guard told her that drivers sometimes pass while a guard is standing in the middle of the road. She also called for flashing pedestrian crossing signals near schools.
