Kings Host Trail Blazers in October 23 Home Opener: 19-Year-Old Acuff, After a Rough Debut, Faces His Idol Lillard

SACRAMENTO, California — The Sacramento Kings, in Sacramento, Sacramento County, California, play their home opener on Friday night, October 23 at Golden 1 Center against the Portland Trail Blazers. Nineteen-year-old rookie guard Darius Acuff Jr., in his debut on October 21 — a 121–96 road loss to the Los Angeles Clippers — played 35 minutes and shot 5-of-24 from the field and 0-of-7 from three for 12 points, with 3 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Before the game, Acuff said he grew up watching film of Portland guard Damian Lillard — "I see a lot of myself in him" — and looks forward to matching up with a Portland backcourt of Lillard, Ja Morant and Jrue Holiday. Lillard, in his first game back from injury, scored 25 points with 6 assists as the Trail Blazers routed the Phoenix Suns 124–83. Kings head coach Doug Christie said he is not worried about Acuff's debut, calling it a necessary part of a rookie's growth; Zach LaVine scored 28 in the Kings' last game and Domantas Sabonis grabbed 18 rebounds.
