BikePortland Founder Maus Steps Back From Front-Line Reporting; the 21-Year-Old Cycling News Site Will Continue

Friday, October 23, 2026 · City · GSM News

PORTLAND, Oregon — Jonathan Maus, founder of BikePortland, the well-known cycling news site in Portland, Multnomah County, Oregon, announced he will step back from front-line news reporting, though the site will continue operating and will mainly publish contributed articles and commentary. The news was announced on October 22 and reported by local media on October 23. Maus said he intends to keep publishing contributed pieces and opinion articles but will not return to his past role combining reporter and "community liaison"; the announcement did not say who will manage the site going forward or how its coverage will change. Maus founded BikePortland in 2005, as Portland's cycling culture was on the rise. Over more than two decades the site's coverage has been closely tied to the city's transportation choices and use of public space, making it one of the most influential community media outlets in a city known for being bicycle-friendly. Its continuation is seen as preserving a platform for local cycling news and community voices, though its future editorial operation remains unclear.
