Philadelphia Orchestra Receives $10.5 Million Gift for Cultural Diplomacy Ahead of Asia Tour

The Philadelphia Orchestra and Ensemble Arts announced on October 23 a $10.5 million commitment from Ambassador David L. Cohen (ret.) and Rhonda R. Cohen establishing a Fund for Cultural Diplomacy to support the orchestra's tours, residencies, performances, recordings and educational exchanges at home and abroad.
The gift also creates an Artistic Innovation and Discovery Fund, guided by Music and Artistic Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin, to support performances of works by overlooked, underrepresented and emerging composers. The orchestra says it has raised about $300 million over the past decade.
The orchestra will tour South Korea and China from November 5 to 15, with the November 15 concert marking its debut at the Beijing Performing Arts Center. In 1973, under Eugene Ormandy, it became the first American orchestra to perform in China and has since returned 13 times with the full ensemble, most recently in 2024.
