Ohio Wesleyan Receives $40 Million Gift to Create Arts and Humanities College, Raise Faculty Pay

Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, in the Columbus metropolitan area, announced at an October 23 campus event a $40 million gift to establish the Harriet Zahn Mecum College of Arts and Humanities and raise faculty salaries across the university.
The gift comes from the late Dudley C. Mecum II, a 1956 graduate, and his family. President Matt vandenBerg used the event to unveil the university's new positioning as "America's university for ambitious self-discovery."
The university notes that about 80 percent of college students change their major at least once, according to the National Center for Education Statistics, and argues that higher education pressures 18-year-old freshmen to choose a major and career path too early. The school previously launched the Delaware Promise, which provides full-tuition scholarships to qualifying Delaware County students.
